Measuring the experience of the early medical postgraduate

As part of a study of learning in the early medical postgraduate years, we examined the trainees' perceptions of their experience over this period. The significance of the findings relates to the evidence that perceptions of the learning environment shape approaches to learning, which in turn impact on the quality of the outcomes.

We used a Careers Experience Questionnaire which was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of courses in higher education and modified it to apply to postgraduate medical education. The modifications were based on research in learning in the first two years of postgraduate medical training.

The results indicate that the modified Careers Experience Questionnaire can be used to measure learning experiences and has distinguishing power between hospitals and job rotations. We identify certain positive outcomes and also highlight areas of deficiency. The instrument should be suitable for measuring change after remedial intervention.
