Ten levers for higher learning: Research based guidelines for improving teaching, assessment, and learning

Thomas A Angelo
The Assessment Center, School for New Learning
DePaul University Chicago, Illinois, USA

Would you trust a physician, engineer, athletic coach, stockbroker, or corporate trainer who didn't keep up with and apply lessons from relevant research in his/her field? Or one who couldn't apply basic principles of good practice in new situations, with new client populations, or in using new technologies? Probably not. Yet many academic staff and a few academic developers remain (relatively) unaware of fundamental research - in psychology, cognitive science and education - on teaching, learning, and assessment and on its relevance to our practice. This interactive workshop will present ten research based guidelines and provide examples of simple, powerful ways to apply them to improve teaching, assessment, and student learning in and beyond our (virtual and actual) classrooms. (The workshop will include mini-lectures, videotaped examples, individual reflection and writing, small group work, and structured discussions.)
