Various studies centred on new forms of communication, particularly those related to computer mediated communication systems (CMCS) have been conducted to confirm theories such as media richness, social influence and so on. When more practical surveys were required, the comparison has often been made between the new media with older ones, seldom between two relatively new media, and if so, only in the European context. Therefore, this paper attempts to examine the impacts of computer mediated communication towards organisational effectiveness in real settings in Malaysian context.

This study is conducted on several branches of Malaysian Agricultural Bank (Bank Pertanian Malaysia or BPM) in the State of Sarawak, Malaysia. The main objective is to evaluate the impact of IBM AS400, a computer mediated communication system, used by the bank for its business transactions, in order to determine the effects of the system's features on employees' behaviour related to their job performance. In addition, the study also intends to determine if there are relationships between the various independent variables (system design) and the dependent variables (employees' motivation, job satisfaction, and workload). The sample of the study consists of employees from various departments of the bank, who have been selected from all the branches in the State of Sarawak. The questionnaire is used to obtain information regarding the respondents' background, their reaction towards the system setup features, and their attitude towards the usage of the system. The interview technique is also employed to validate the findings.

The data is analysed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) such as the descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The initial findings revealed that the score of suitability of system's features to users is quite high. The findings also revealed that the usage of the system helped reduce the workload of the Bank employees. Based on the findings, several suggestions were put forward so that the system can be utilised as an effective tool for better management and communication amongst the Bank employees, between the Bank branches within the State, as well as in Malaysia as a whole.
